Feature Update: Read-Only Playgrounds on codedamn

Building projects on codedamn Playgrounds is fun, but you know what’s more fun? Flaunting them on your portfolio. Now create Read Only Playgrounds and share them with the world. Read on for more details on this new update!

Foreground

codedamn Playgrounds is a stand-alone offering we’ve built for budding developers to assist them in learning and writing code without ever having to leave the browser. It allows you to get real development experience without having to install all the dependencies on your system and bidding farewell to the space you could’ve saved.

You can harness the capabilities of Playgrounds to build full-fledged applications in Bun, Next.js, React, Vue 3, Solidity, and a lot more. Create a new Playground by clicking here

What’s New?

With Read Only Playgrounds you can protect your files from being overwritten without your consent. This allows you to freely pass around the link to your Playground without ever worrying about negative ramifications or vandalizations.

Read Only Mode Restrictions

You can also create a clone of a Read Only Playground by simply clicking on “Fork” without disturbing the main project. Note that you can also hide your project and maintain it privately. In short, you have full control over your code on Playgrounds and you choose who gets access to what and when!

Forking a Playground

Why is this Cool?

Consider that you are conducting a workshop and want everyone to grab a copy of your code, but at the same time, you don’t want folks to mess around. Simply share the link to your Playground, ask the attendees to create a Fork and you’re all set. Trust me when I say that you don’t need to know Git to work on Playgrounds! If you want to collaborate on the same Playground though, give Feature Update – Collaborations on Playground a read!

The Read Only Feature opens doors to new possibilities and we can’t wait to see what you come up with!

How can I Enter Read Only Mode?

By default, every playground is set to Read Only Mode. Let’s see how we can check and change permissions.

The process is really simple, head over to codedamn Playgrounds and create a Playground of your own if you don’t have it already.

Creating a Playground

Click on the button towards the top-right corner of your screen which says “Share”.

Sharing a Playground

In the modal that opens up, add Collaborators if any through the “Share Playground” field, and then take a look at the two options below in the “General Access” category.

Managing Collaborators

You can toggle the first button to make the Playground “Private” and hide it from the world and note that all Playgrounds are set to “Read Only” initially to protect your code. Again to change that, all you need to do is toggle the second button and you’re good to go! If you followed along, you should see something like this.

Controlling Access of Playgrounds

Yep, that’s literally it. That’s how easy it is to share or hide your Playground from your buddies who can potentially vandalize it.

Ending Notes

We try our level best to make sure that you have the smoothest experience on our platform and hence we are always on the lookout for suggestions to make codedamn better. If you have any feedback for us around this feature update or for that fact anything here, join us on our Discord Server and let us know!

I’ll be back with another feature update soon and in the meantime, learn to code like it’s 2030, only with codedamn!
