Ports can be used to run multiple services on a single machine and communicate all of them differently.

Informative
IP is your home address and port is your room number. Suppose you want to send a love letter to your girlfriend's room. First you need to know where is her house( ip ) then you need to know which is her room( port ).
Port numbers are basically assigned to redirect responses to the client requests made to the particular service or program the request came from when there are multiple programs / applications are running on the machine at the same time. Is this understanding correct? Also, how are these port numbers assigned. Is there any mechanism in place locally or over the ISP just like DNS resolvers? And if the port numbers are not dedicated ones for a particular service are they just random numbers assigned? If so how can the random port number assigned identify the exact program it need s to establish the connection with?
For a person who is starting from scratch this is little bit difficult to understand......
This cool
